Weekend trip to Zaandam

In March, we made our first outing of 2021- a staycation at Zaandam!

It was supposed to be a small break from all the small business shenanigans, but I ended up answering some work e-mails anyway (oops…)

Windmills at Zaanse Schans

Windmills at Zaanse Schans

It was such a windy day, and of course, it must be that way around the year as the windmills were strategically constructed there. Built on the dam of the river Zaan, Zaanse Schans is a very popular tourist destination.

Today, one can spot only eight windmills at this location. Constructed over the 17th and 18th centuries, there were approximately 900 windmills in this area. Since 1960s, most windmills have been relocated to other spots along the bank of the Zaan.

Albert Heijn museum, Zaanse Schans

There are many museums in this area, and one can find various workshops as well. However, as we visited during Corona times, all of them were closed.

We spotted the Albert Heijn museum, which was so quaint and adorable!

There are also a few antiques shops and small eateries. Not much was open when we visited, but it must be a treat in its full glory!

The scenery is very picturesque, and there are lots of photo-ops for the gram users! I am not particularly fond of portraits, but they didn’t turn out half bad!

Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood in Zaandam, which has its unique charm. The hotels in Zaandam are built to cater to tourists, and provide them a slice of the Dutch life! And that is why they are also constructed aesthetically, and in interesting shapes!

Many tourists visit the Inntel Hotel, located in the Zaandam Centrum to take pictures of its unique build. We also spotted the Zaan Hotel, which has a gorgeous facade!

Zaandam Centrum is one of the more spectacular centrums we have been to around the Netherlands, and that’s because it is built over two levels over a canal!

It is quite an unbelievable architecture, and that makes it even more beautiful.

Zaandam Station

Zaandam station is built on the upper level, and is surrounded by some stores and eateries.

It is definitely worth a visit, and we hope to go back once the pandemic is over!

So are you planning to visit Zaanse Schans soon?
